What Your Annual Well-Woman Visit Actually Screens For

Your annual well-woman visit is one of the most important hours you'll spend on your health all year. It's a dedicated time for us to look at the big picture of your wellness, from reproductive and cervical health to your bones and menopausal symptoms.

Board-certified OB/GYN Dr. A Michael Coppa, with offices in Providence, Cranston, and Smithfield, Rhode Island, uses this time to answer your questions, whether about menopause-related concerns or STD prevention. It also allows him to obtain baseline measurements such as your blood pressure and weight. Tracking this data annually allows Dr. Coppa to compare your health information from one year to the next, looking for subtle changes that could indicate a developing problem. Baseline comparisons can detect problems even before you experience any noticeable symptoms.

Based on your medical needs, Dr. Coppa can also offer guidance on dietary changes, physical activity, weight loss, improved sleep, and stress management.

At each phase of life, your annual well-woman exam may be slightly different. Dr. Coppa tailors the screenings to your specific age and medical history.

Here’s what to expect.

In your 20s and 30s

During these years, we focus on cervical cancer prevention. We perform a Pap test to screen for abnormal cells and HPV testing to look for the virus that can cause those cell changes. You’ll also receive a clinical breast exam to check for lumps, thickening, or skin changes. Contraception, family planning, sexual health, and fertility issues are also addressed.

In your 40s and 50s

This stage of life often also includes discussions about the transition into perimenopause and menopause. Starting at age 40, you will be prescribed an annual mammogram and at 45 be advised to begin colorectal cancer screenings. We also monitor any changes in your cycle and symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.

Age 65 and beyond

Post-menopause, the focus is on protecting your independence and mobility. This includes routine bone density scans to check for osteoporosis (weakened bones) and continued monitoring of your heart health and pelvic comfort.

Your annual well-woman exam also helps build trust between you and Dr. Coppa, so that you feel confident about sharing your medical concerns — even sensitive ones. Open communication leads to better care for you and helps you feel more empowered and confident about your wellness journey.
