Gynecology Q & A

What gynecology services are available?

Dr. Coppa offers comprehensive, in-office gynecology services to protect your overall health. He encourages all women to schedule annual visits for routine pelvic exams and offers services like Pap smears, contraception counseling, menopause consultations, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing.

Additionally, Dr. Coppa is highly experienced in diagnosing and treating conditions like:

  • Fibroids
  • Infertility
  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Pelvic organ prolapse

You can also receive reliable diagnostic testing to determine the root cause of any pelvic or abdominal pain.

What is a Pap smear?

A Pap smear is a routine test that can identify abnormal cervical cells which may develop into cancer. Pap smears are recommended for sexually active women and those with a history or family history of cancer.

Dr. Coppa performs a Pap smear during regular pelvic exams, collecting a sample of cells he sends to a medical laboratory for further analysis. He may also collect cells for STD testing when necessary.

Who needs STD testing?

Many people with an STD aren’t aware they have it, as not all conditions show noticeable symptoms. Dr. Coppa recommends STD screenings if you currently have more than one sexual partner or have unprotected sex at any time.

After discussing your lifestyle habits and STD concerns, Dr. Coppa can recommend which tests are necessary. He offers STD testing for conditions like:

  • Herpes
  • Syphilis
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Dr. Coppa can perform STD screenings during a routine pelvic exam. Some tests, such as herpes and syphilis, require blood work.

What treatment options are available for endometriosis?

Dr. Coppa offers several treatment options for endometriosis, a condition where your uterine lining grows outside your uterus. This lining functions normally, thickening and breaking down during your menstrual cycle.

Endometriosis can cause persistent pain that interferes with your life. Dr. Coppa may recommend treatments such as hormone therapy, minimally invasive surgery, or a hysterectomy to slow down tissue growth and resolve your symptoms.

Laparoscopic surgical techniques are often the last resort when other therapies don’t work for you, or you wish to become pregnant in the near future. Dr. Coppa inserts a slender instrument through a small incision near your navel to remove excess tissue.
